Applicants currently or formerly employed by a full-service law enforcement agency in Georgia must be in good standing with GA P.O.S.T. Approved lateral transfers are hired at the rank of Deputy Sheriff Senior.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application
  • Must be a US Citizen for certification
  • Must be able to work any shift, weekends, and holidays
  • Must obtain a state certificate from jailer’s school within six months from date of hire
  • Must have ability to use computer for data entry in jail management software and report writing
  • Law enforcement, military, or security experience a plus

Hiring Process

The following are general guidelines regarding the employment process:

1. Apply

Applications are screened typically within seven working days after submission to determine eligibility.

2. Review

The Human Resources department reviews all eligible applications and forwards them to the GCSO Professional Standards Section.

3. Selection

The Professional Standards Section reviews and screens applications for hiring guidelines disqualifiers. If there are no disqualifiers, background investigators schedule applicants for interviews.

4. Conditional Job Offer

Upon passing the panel interview, applicants are offered a Conditional Job Offer. Once accepted, a thorough background check, including a polygraph exam, psychological exam, medical exam, and fingerprinting for criminal history purposes, is conducted.

5. Final Job Offer

A “Final Job Offer” is extended after successfully completing all required background checks.

Generally, the hiring process takes 2 to 4 months, depending on the applicant’s background.
